The Asphalt Jungle is a brilliantly conceived and executed anatomy of a crime. Recently paroled master criminal Erwin "Doc" Riedenschneider, with funding from a crooked, gathers several crooks together in Cincinnati for a Big Caper. Among those involved are Dix (Sterling Hayden), an impoverished hood who sees the upcoming jewel heist as a means to finance his dream of owning a horse farm. Hunch-backed cafe owner (James Whitmore) is hired on to be the driver for the heist; professional safecracker Louis Ciavelli assembles the tools of his trade; and a bookie acts as Emmerich's go-between. The robbery is pulled off successfully, but an alert night watchman shoots Ciavelli. From this point on, the meticulously planned crime falls apart with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy.—All Rovi

It was, at the time, the most powerful naval attack force ever assembled--34 Japanese warships, including six carriers and 350 fighter planes. At 6:30 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, it was positioned 270 miles north of the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The attack was swift. It left chaos in its wake, damaged much of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, killed more than 2,400 soldiers, Marines and civilians, sank the U.S.S. Arizona, with 1,177 men on board, and plunged America into World War II. The Friends of the Cranford Public Library invite you to join Dr. James P. Kane as he recounts the story of the attack on Pearl Harbor in words, pictures, and music. Admission is free and all are welcome.
