This FREE program is being co-sponsored by UCEDC, a nonprofit economic development corporation that is dedicated to helping New Jersey’s small business community. You may not realize it, but if you own a business (or are thinking of starting one), you have (or will have) intellectual property assets that need legal protection! Do you have a business name or brand? How about trade secrets such as price lists, customer lists, supplier lists, recipes, etc.? Too often, business owners do nothing to protect these assets and then suffer the consequences when they are lost or stolen. Equally damaging can be your ignorance of someone else’s intellectual property rights, resulting in the dreaded cease and desist letter (or worse!). This free workshop will review intellectual property assets such as trade secrets, trademarks, patents and copyrights and how they can be protected at a state and federal level. We’ll walk you through the simple steps every business owner can take to register copyrights and trademarks. And we’ll identify the different ways that a business may unknowingly infringe upon the property rights of other businesses. Program begins at 2:15pm. The Crane-Phillips House Museum is located at 124 North Union Avenue, Cranford. “While many recognize the name Louis Comfort Tiffany and associate it with turn of the century art glass creations, far fewer may recognized the name Frederic Carder. Carder, the founder of Steuben Glass, was a contemporary of Tiffany, who considered him his most important competitor (even bringing an unsuccessful lawsuit against him for theft of intellectual property). While similar to Tiffany in being a “Renaissance Man” in his breadth of skills, Carder distinguished himself from the former by actually blowing some of the creations he designed—something Tiffany never did. Cranford Historical Society Trustee and art glass collector Vic Bary will speak about Frederic Carder and Steuben Glass. The presentation will include many visuals as well as some examples of Carder’s Art Nouveau glass. Mr. Bary has previously presented on the Art Glass of Louis Tiffany, as well as competitors Quezal and Durand on behalf of the Cranford Historical Society previously this year. Admission is free. Space is limited so reservations are required. Program is not recommended for children. To reserve your seat, please call the Historical Society’s office at 908-276-0082 or email us at cranfordhistoricalsociety@verizon.net.
