    You are invited to Books & Bagels, a book chat program. The format is simple. Bring a few of your more recent favorite books and tell the other members of the group what you like about them. The books can be new or old, fiction or non-fiction, classic or contemporary. There is no required reading, and you will have the opportunity to learn about books recommended by other group members. Plus, refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Friends of the Cranford Public Library! Registration is NOT required. Attend as many or as few sessions as you like. Subsequent sessions will take place on October 4, November 1, and December 6.

  • Staged Play Reading by the Theater Project

    The Theater Project will be present a staged reading of "The D Word," a new comedy by Susan Barsky. In "The D Word," a woman contemplating leaving her husband of 15 years embarks on a journey with the “help” of her friend, mother, brother, and other colorful characters. Ms. Barsky’s full-length works include "Expectations," which was produced at numerous regional and summer stock theaters, including the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival, Queens Theatre in the Park, the Stamford Center for the Arts, the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Theatre, and the Cape Playhouse. She received a 2005 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for her play, "Owed to My First Love," which was produced at the Stamford Fringe and Premiere Stages Play festivals. The Theater Project is an acclaimed, New Jersey-based professional theater group, and the winner of two New Jersey Tony Awards. Following the readings, the play will be discussed by the audience, the director, the actors, and Ms. Barsky. Admission is free and all are welcome.

    Twice a year, antiques enthusiasts head to Cranford, New Jersey for an outstanding outdoor antique show and sale held at the Cranford United Methodist Church. This year's event, slated for Saturday, September 13, 2014, promises to offer the same high level of quality as in the past. Items for sale this year will be fine antique and vintage items Brimfield style, under tents and on tables. Collectors can expect to find period furniture, fine and decorative art, porcelain, pottery, period ceramics, silver and jewelry at the sale. Additional categories include linens, textiles, books, musical instruments, toys and dolls; postcards, tools and antique advertising, as well as tobacciana, clocks, metalware, holiday collectibles and historical items. The family-friendly, day-long antiques sale opens at 9 a.m. and runs till 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free.     The Friends of the Cranford Public Library are pleased to welcome Dr. Charlie Horner and his program entitled “Under the Street Lamp: Tales from the Doo Wop Era.” Learn the stories behind the Moonglows, the Dominoes, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, and the Harptones. Hear such Doo Wop classics as “In the Still of the Night,” “Gloria,” and “Earth Angel.” Dr. Horner’s presentation is based on 40 years of research and 20 years on the air at Philadelphia’s WXPN-FM. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Cranford Public Library. Admission is free and all are welcome.

    The presentation, dubbed “Be the Seatbelt” in reference to parents providing safety measures as children navigate the information superhighway, will be coordinated by Detective Sergeant Gerard Quinn. Sergeant Quinn is a 20 year veteran Cranford police officer with over 14 years of experience conducting and supervising criminal investigations involving technology, social media, and the Internet. “Be the Seatbelt” will address the most common social media applications available to children and adolescents, such as Instagram, Vine, SnapChat,, and others. It will also address the positive uses for technology and discuss the potential pitfalls faced by children without a concept of the public and permanent nature of the Internet. After comparing the current technological expansion to the past development of cable television, video games and video cassette recorders, the presentation will conclude with tools parents can use to expand their knowledge and understanding of online socialization and connected devices.
