Cranford Senior Housing consists of two adjacent apartment buildings connected by a large social center and operated by the fifteen volunteer members of the Cranford Housing Board. The older building, the Edward K. Gill Apartments is a 130 unit HUD subsidized facility with a maximum allowable gross income of 80% of the county median income, currently $45,100 for one person. The five story building contains studio, one bedroom and some two bedroom apartments. The rents are on a sliding scale and residents pay 30% of their adjusted income to rent. Cranford-Lincoln Apartments is a low income tax credit facility which is restricted to residents whose gross income is under 60% of median, currently $37,200 for one person. The rents there are $760 or $860 depending on income. All utilities are included in the rent except for an extra charge for air conditioning usage. Applicants must be age 62 or above and federal regulations prevent us from giving preferences to residents of Cranford. Periodically when our waiting list is low, we hold open enrollments where we accept applications for our waiting list.

Our mission is to provide quality affordable housing to low and moderate income seniors in a safe and stimulating environment with the support services to enable them to age in place. In order to prevent premature institutionalization we offer a full array of activities and services. We have exercise classes, health and wellness education, musical entertainment, parties, special events and our own annual talent show. We strive to bring people together and keep them connected to one another.

We also have a state funded grant which offers subsidized evening meals, housekeeping, personal care and medication assistance to those people requesting some support. This program is an essential part of efforts to help our residents remain independent. There is also a lunch program sponsored by the county on Tuesdays and Thursdays which is open to all seniors of Union County. The suggested donation for lunch is $1.75 and reservations can be made by calling Cranford-Lincoln at (908)931-0194.

The Cranford Housing Board is very proud of the numerous awards the senior housing has won as well being recognized as a "National Community of Quality". For further information please call (908) 272-9180.
