Hanson Park Conservancy Covid-19 Memorial Bench Fundraiser @ Virtual
Jun 29 all-day

Dear Friends of Hanson Park Conservancy,

Please help HPC honor those we’ve lost to COVID-19 by contributing to a Memorial Bench.
COVID-19 has taken the lives of over 150 residents of Cranford. HPC would like to honor those lives by placing a Memorial Bench next to the Butterfly Garden –– a beautiful and serene place for remembrance and reflection.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to this memorial. Please contribute any dollar amount that you wish towards this memorial, which remembers our fellow residents. The bench is expected to be installed later this year and will include a plaque in tribute to those we’ve lost.

The unique Hanson Park benches are hand-made by a craftsman in upstate New York. They were chosen as part of the original design which envisioned a passive environmentally sensitive park along the Rahway River.
Tax-exempt contributions can be made by mailing a check directly to HPC PO Box 542, Cranford, NJ 07016, visiting our website at www.hansonparkconservancy.com, or through our Facebook page.

We’d like to thank the entire community of Cranford for always supporting HPC.
Feel free to visit the park at 38 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, NJ. Details on the bench installation will be provided at a later date.

Jersey Ripper? Cranford’s Ties to a Gilded Age Crime @ Cranford Community Center

After an 1891 homicide near the South Street Seaport, New York’s coroner announced Jack the Ripper had arrived. As panic grew, authorities charged a North African immigrant with murder. He was finally freed over a decade later when a prominent New Jersey resident produced a mysterious artifact. Recently, author Luke Jerod Kummer discovered new evidence in this unsolved case, inspiring his Audible Original drama, “Takers Mad” (adbl.co/3ttLvrr). On Saturday, April 23rd, the Cranford Historical Society will host a special event for Kummer to present his findings and discuss this strange chapter in local history.

Joey Leone: The History of Blues in America @ Cranford Public Library
Sep 6 @ 4:16 pm – 5:16 pm

In the spirit of Ken Burns’ breakout PBS documentary series on American country music, acclaimed guitarist and music historian Joey Leone presents “The History of Blues in America” a one hour program covering the history, influence and social impact of American blues music through songs, stories and historical facts. Joey highlights the influence of blues on virtually all styles of contemporary music over the past 7 decades playing a variety of songs on multiple guitars from his personal collection.

In addition to the live music segments, he touches on recurring themes of how the blues transcended racial boundaries, brought people together in times of celebration and times of healing, and show the blues followed the migration from the rural south to the urban north. Joey also ties in his upbringing in Brooklyn NY, and how important the Public Library System was for his discovery, passion, and education about music and music history. A lifelong career musician, he has toured and recorded as a guitar player for many high profile artists including Etta James, The Coasters, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Chaka Khan, and many more.

Drive-Thru Food Collection @ Cranford United Methodist Church

This week when you go food shopping, please consider picking up a few items for families in need. Join us at the next Drive-Thru Food Collection Saturday, March 11, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot of Cranford United Methodist Church. Did you know that as of March 1st, NJ families who receive government funds for food (aka food stamps/SNAP) are receiving less money because pandemic funds have expired? With the high cost of food biting into all our household budgets, let’s keep up our efforts to help our neighbors. Fresh produce and non-perishables are requested. Hope to see you on Saturday!

Place your bags in your trunk, drive up, pop your trunk and volunteers will remove them, no contact needed! Your food donations will be given to Cranford Family Care and St. Joseph’s Social Services. Please be sure that there is no expired food.

Here are some suggestions for donations. Cranford Family Care and St. Joseph’s social Services are particularly in need of these items, but anything you can provide is appreciated!
