Feb 27 all-day
Brian L Lehrer / Luke’s Warriors 2 at the Snow Bowl @ MetLife Stadium | East Rutherford | New Jersey | United States

I will be competing in the NY Giants Snow Bowl, a flag football tournament at MetLife Stadium that raises money to benefit Special Olympics NJ.

My team, Luke’s Warriors, is playing in honor of Luke Brown, a courageous Cranford kid whose family we share a special bond with.  Myself and more than 30 other local dads have been practicing every Sunday morning ‘on the frozen tundra’ of my old high school field in preparation for my first Snow Bowl on Saturday, March 16th.

Please help support Special Olympics New Jersey by making a donation.

Thanks so much!  Your contribution, big or small, helps 25,000 athletes throughout the state reach their goals.

Special Olympics NJ came to Cranford High School to film one of our practices with the other local team.  WARNING:  It’s awesome and heart-warming.

Homefirst Hosts an Evening of Thanks to Honor Community Philanthropy

PLAINFIELD, NJ – Homefirst Interfaith Housing and Family Services will host our annual Evening of Thanks on April 10, 2019, 6 PM – 9:30 PM at the Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains, honoring the contributions of four community philanthropist. This year’s honorees are:

1. Benjamin Serna, Homefirst Hero
2. Armando Guerra, NJ Governor of Lions Club International (District 16J)
3. Annette Quijano, Assemblywoman NJ Legislative District 20
4. Adrian Mapp, Mayor of Plainfield, NJ

“Each year the Homefirst Our Evening of Thanks event recognizes and honors the people, businesses and organizations who have been extremely generous with their time, talent and treasure to enable us to offer the services we provide to nearly 2,000 children, men and women throughout Union County. It’s only with the support of our partners, funders and volunteers that we are able to make a difference in the lives of so many, by giving them a helping hand to a pathway out of poverty,” said Rev. Ron Thomas, Homefirst Board President.

Benjamin Serna continues a family legacy of giving as a Homefirst Hero. Benjamin is recognized this year for organizing a costume drive for kids at the Plainfield Family Support Center. “In my life before this project I had never realized how much of a luxury it is to have the costume you want. This was the important part to me — I didn’t want people to just donate costumes. I wanted these kids to get the new costume they wanted,” said Serna.

Armando Guerra, NJ Governor of Lions Club International is an honoree for his contribution to humanitarian relief. Guerra’s reach has been felt in the community through his efforts with Lions Club International. In addition, Guerra’s philanthropic achievements are complemented by a solid 13 years of real estate experience where he has been helping families turn their houses into homes since 2005.

Champion legislator, Assemblywoman Annette Quijano is honored for her community advocacy. Assemblywoman Quijano serves as Chairperson of the Hispanic Delegations on Racial Equity, and has received recognition for her participation in the State Legislative Leaders Foundation’s 2011 Emerging Leaders Program and Emergency Preparedness Program to provide comprehensive workshops for those affected by “Superstorm Sandy.”

Adrian Mapp, Mayor of Plainfield, accredited for his ‘aggressive agenda focused on rebuilding the city’s economy and ensuring opportunity for all residents’, is among this year’s honorees. His civic duties lead to such initiatives as Plainfield Promise and Healthy Plainfield aimed to promote financial literacy for kindergarteners, create scholarships for high school graduates, as well as, create vocational and job training opportunities.
