Operation Take Back @ Cranford Police Department
Apr 27 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Operation Take Back @ Cranford Police Department | Cranford | New Jersey | United States

On Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Cranford Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 17th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the Cranford Police Department at 8 Springfield Avenue, rear entrance. (We cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last fall Americans turned in nearly 460 tons (more than 900,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and almost 4,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 16 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in almost 11 million pounds—nearly 5,500 tons—of pills. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Ameri cans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the April 27 Take Back Day event, go to www.DEATakeBack.com

Greta's Run @ Roosevelt Intermediate School | Westfield | New Jersey | United States

5K RUN • WALK • ROLL • VOLUNTEER • DONATE • SPONSOR | April 28

Greta’s Run is the principal fundraiser for Greta’s Run Foundation, a volunteer-led, granting-making 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Greta’s Run is organized in memory of Greta Schoenemann, a Westfield High School freshman who died from injuries sustained on the first anniversary of 9/11 when a tree fell on her during lunch. Her childhood friends, Jayne Ruotolo and Ben Nanna, founded Greta’s Run in 2013, to continue the work Greta was already doing. In honor of Greta’s sister Elise, who has cerebral palsy, all proceeds benefit people with special & adaptive needs.

“The Westfield Public Schools join with the community in upholding the values of kindness and compassion that have become Greta’s legacy. The students, athletes and staff look forward to helping make Greta’s Run a success.”

The Opioid Epidemic: Silently Affecting Our Community

Union County residents can learn about the local impacts of the national opioid crisis first-hand from representatives of the Union County Prosecutor, Sheriff, Police Division and other professionals by attending a free public meeting hosted by the Public Safety Committee of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders titled, The Opioid Epidemic: Silently Affecting Our Community.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 21, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the McManus School auditorium, at 300 Edgewood Road in Linden. Admission is free and no pre-registration is required.

“Opioid abuse impacts the entire community, and that is why we are providing the public with an open discussion about the scope and nature of opioid abuse in Union County, and an assessment of the tools that are available to fight it,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “I encourage all concerned citizens to come and learn how public resources are deployed to fight this epidemic.”

“Although the most recent numbers are encouraging, now is the time to bear down and get to the root of the crisis,” said Freeholder Christopher Hudak, who is the Chairman of the Public Safety Committee. “We are looking forward to hearing from professionals on the front lines of the battle against opioid abuse, and sharing this information with the public.”

The Opioid Epidemic: Silently Affecting Our Community will include:

  • Overview of facts and trends about the opioid epidemic in Union County
  • Details about the County Prosecutor’s Operation Helping Hands program and CLEAR, a collaborative program including the Union County Department of Public Safety, the Office of the Union County Sheriff, the nonprofit organization Prevention Links, and the Union County Department of Human Services
  • Prevention Links presentation on prevention, treatment and recovery featuring personal stories and Recovery Coaches
  • Information on Naloxone lifesaving assistance presented by First Responders
  • Office of the Union County Sheriff K-9 demonstration and discussion about the impact of fentanyl on drug detection
  • Discussion of statewide efforts to combat the opioid epidemic by representatives from the New Jersey Department of Health and Department of Human Services

A question and answer period will follow the presentations.
