Westfield Area YMCA Sports Programs Keep Youth Active @ Westfield Area YMCA

The Westfield Area YMCA’s doors are open, and with it the return of YMCA programs such as basketball clinics, Tae Kwon Do classes, Flyers Track and Field, and youth swim.

Basketball clinics will be divided into five different age groups: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd-5th Grade, and 6th-8th Grade, each with varying start and end dates and times. Clinics begin Saturday 11/21 and run through Sunday 12/20. The Kindergarten and 1st Grade clinics will take place at the Bauer Branch Gym, 422 East Broad St, while the rest of the clinics will be held at the Main Y Gym, 220 Clark St.
Participants will be assigned a clinic time with a 15-minute gap in between to allow for thorough cleaning of equipment and transition time in between groups. Basketballs will be supplied and will be thoroughly cleaned before and after each clinic.  Participants are welcome to bring their own basketball if they prefer.

Tae Kwon Do is underway.  All classes will be held at the Main Y, 220 Clark St. Temperature checks and health screening questions will be held upon entry to the facility.  All classes are in person with a Zoom option, except for the Intro class. Each student has 200 square feet of space, more than ample for social distancing.

A mini four-week session of the Flyers Track and Field program is underway outdoors at Oak Ridge Park.  The season runs from 11/2-11/25. Athletes learn proper technique from USATF-certified coaches and build endurance and speed.  Practice options include two distance groups, one for ages 7-10 and one for ages 11-15, and a sprint group for ages 9-15.

A 10-week youth swim session is now being held. Parent-child classes through Aquatic Conditioning are available.

To register and for more details, visit westfieldynj.org or call (908)-301-9622.

The Y is for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.  Financial assistance is available.

DESCRIPTION

The Union County Rugby Football Club, located in New Jersey, has been in operation since 1974 and touts over 1,000 club members from kindergarten age to adult. We offer both touch and tackle rugby teams that play year-round. The Club will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in three short years, and we are beginning to fundraise and draw awareness to this monumental event. In addition to the 50th, we are also preparing to start a modified season, our first since we lost 2 full seasons to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Since we were not able to gather on the field last year, we have decided to host a virtual race encompassing all of the rugby clubs in NJ to foster some friendly competition and to get people excited for the possible restart of competitive play this Spring.

Challenge yourself to one (or multiple) of the virtual race options by logging your total accumulated mileage over a time frame of your choosing. (doesn’t have to be done all at once & you can walk, run, or bike!)

If you sign up for 2 races at the same time you will receive a 10% discount on your registration automatically.

The Home Field Loop: 13.1 miles covers the same distance you would if you were to travel between all of the pitches Union County Rugby plays home games on. This would take you from Rahway River Park in Rahway to Madison Avenue Park also in Rahway, to Unami Park in Cranford, to Warinaco Park in Roselle, and back to the start at Rahway River Park.

The River Run: 42 miles is the combined distance of the two mightiest waterways running through Union County, the Rahway River, and the Elizabeth River.

The Jersey Cup: 257 Miles is a daunting task, but covers the same distance you would if you hopped in your car to tour all of the home pitches of New Jersey’s NINE rugby clubs. This route goes south to north and would take you from Jersey Shore to South Jersey to Monmouth to Princeton to Union to Bayonne to Morris to Montclair to North Jersey. This event has its own special medal and shirt that are different from the Home Field Loop and The River Run.

HOW IT WORKS:

  • Register for any of the challenges
  • The event has just begun! You have until June 30, 2021, to submit results!
  • Log your workouts and distances on the results page (click here)
  • We’ll ship your awesome race swag to your door!

Oct 15 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Cranford PD and Cranford PAL Host Donation Drive 10/15- Level the Playing Field

Did you know that 1 in 5 underserved households are not getting their kids involved in athletics because of the rising price of sporting equipment? Leveling the Playing Field is nonprofit that collects and redistributes equipment to expand access and equity within youth sports and recreation programs in under-resourced communities. LPF expanded to a third warehouse location in Philadelphia during Fall 2021 to ensure that all kids in the Greater Philadelphia area can get off the sidelines!

We will be collecting on Saturday October 15, 2022 at the Cranford Community Center 220 Walnut Ave Cranford NJ from 09:00 am to 12:00 pm. Please drive to the rear of the building an volunteers will unload your vehicle or you can park and drop it off in the lobby. So clean out your garages and clear the yard of used sporting equipment so that kids who are less fortunate are able to enjoy them! To learn more about LPF, please visit www.levelingtheplayingfield.org or contact Detective John Rattigan at [email protected] or Lt. Matthew Nazzaro at [email protected].

LPF accepts new and gently used sporting equipment donations to directly redistribute to kids in need.  We appreciate you making sure your donations are still in SAFE, FUNCTIONAL condition.  Have a question about the condition of your gear?  Contact LPF directly at [email protected].

Drive-Thru Food Collection @ Cranford United Methodist Church
Mar 11 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Drive-Thru Food Collection @ Cranford United Methodist Church

This week when you go food shopping, please consider picking up a few items for families in need. Join us at the next Drive-Thru Food Collection Saturday, March 11, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot of Cranford United Methodist Church. Did you know that as of March 1st, NJ families who receive government funds for food (aka food stamps/SNAP) are receiving less money because pandemic funds have expired? With the high cost of food biting into all our household budgets, let’s keep up our efforts to help our neighbors. Fresh produce and non-perishables are requested. Hope to see you on Saturday!

Place your bags in your trunk, drive up, pop your trunk and volunteers will remove them, no contact needed! Your food donations will be given to Cranford Family Care and St. Joseph’s Social Services. Please be sure that there is no expired food.

Here are some suggestions for donations. Cranford Family Care and St. Joseph’s social Services are particularly in need of these items, but anything you can provide is appreciated!

-Oil

-Mayonnaise

-Canned meals

-Kids snacks; juice boxes

-Baked goods

-Jelly

-Sugar

-Flour

-Diapers size 2; Baby wipes

-Dish detergent; Laundry detergent; any cleaning products

-Tuna

-Pasta

-Peanut butter

-Paper goods: 8oz. hot and cold cups, toilet paper, napkins, paper towels, heavy duty paper plates.

-Plastic utensils

Hardy fresh fruit and vegetables are also needed, such as potatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, pears and oranges.

Cranford United Methodist Church’s parking lot is located next to the Cranford Library.

Hope to see you on Saturday! Can’t make that date? There are bins outside near the Little Free Pantry in the church’s parking lot where donations can be dropped any time, 24/7. Visit us at cranfordumc.com to learn more.
